Progain - the most effective weight gaining formula in the UK for muscle and size
BIOMAX™ whey protein
Protein quality is an important consideration when considering the use of a weight gain supplement. Many weight gainers are packed full of casein, soya, pea and egg proteins, which may not be optimal for maximising lean muscle mass and strength. Experts generally agree that the best weight gainers contain whey protein. Progain is formulated with a blend of whey protein called BIOMAX™, designed to trigger protein synthesis and enhance muscle growth [2].
The premium whey proteins contained in Progain are supported by extensive human and animal research studies, to support muscle growth, increase anti-oxidant levels (glutathione) and enhance athletic performance.
The biggest protein debate regarding weight gain, is between the use of the milk proteins, whey and casein. However, casein is much cheaper than whey, and the superior muscle building and performance benefits of whey have been reported by the majority of clinical studies.
A recent study by a Canadian research team highlighted that after a 3-month supplementation period, whey protein increased exercise performance, fat loss and perceived energy levels, significantly more than casein [4]
In terms of pure muscle building effects, whey has also been shown to have better effects than casein. A recent Australian study examined the effect of an 10-week protein supplementation regime, comparing the muscle building effects of whey isolate (similar to the Biomax used in Progain) and casein [8].
Thirteen trialists consumed either whey isolate or casein, in conjunction with an identical weight-training programme. Following the study, whey isolate users displayed mean gains in muscle mass of over 10 pounds, compared with only 2 pounds in the casein group. The whey group also gained more strength, although glutamine levels dropped similarly in both groups.
Complex carbohydrate
Many weight gainers contain high levels of simple sugars, including fructose and sucrose (the same sugar in cakes and cookies), to keep production costs at a minimum. However, simple carbohydrates promote excessive insulin and high blood sugar levels, which may promote weight gain as fat rather than muscle. High-quality weight gainers such as Progain use "slow-burning" carbohydrates such as maltodextrin, an easily digested carb derived from natural corn starch (often known as glucose polymers). Complex carbohydrates such as maltodextrin elicits a smaller rise in blood sugar and insulin, making it particularly effective in promoting lean weight gain, as opposed to undesirable and unhealthy fat.
MCTs
Progain contains a blend of "metabolic fats", which may provide the energy needed for growth, without the risk of excess fat storage. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are fats with a
unique chemical structure, permitting rapid digestion and metabolism. Unlike most other fats, MCTs are transported directly to the liver (fats are usually broken down in the intestine) where they are immediately available for energy production. In effect, MCTs are metabolised in a similar way to carbohydrates [3]. Research supports the view that MCTs are not stored as body fat, and may therefore be useful to anyone looking to gain weight and muscle mass without adding fat.
